High Standards – Our Requirements for Breeding Females

Breeding Female Cattle At Flying H Genetics, we adhere to a high set of standards for all of our animals, not only for our own satisfaction but for that of each of our clients. We’ve already looked at our nine criteria for bulls, but we also work hard to ensure that our females are problem free and produce only the best calves too. That’s why Flying H Genetics has eight separate standards that each breeding female must meet to ensure that our customers get only the best animals on the market. Let’s take a closer look at the eight standards each bull’s dam and all females at Flying H must meet:

Disposition

The last thing any cattleman wants is wild cattle. Temperamental cattle are a health and safety risk that is not acceptable, which is why we eliminate bad dispositioned cattle and won’t sell them for breeding purposes—they do make great hamburger though.

Conformation and Soundness

A bull must be able to perform his breeding duties, which means that he must be sound footed, structurally correct, pass a breeding soundness exam, be healthy and developed correctly.  Which is exactly what ROUGHAGE N’ READY and GROWN ON GRASS bulls are—sound, athletic, muscular/not fat and guaranteed breeders.  Our total development, genetic and culling procedures extend the life of our bulls and females and ensure that each animal is healthy and ready to work the day you buy him.

Teat and Udder Quality

A bull’s mother is a good indication of what his daughters will look like. This trait is especially important when trying to build your own herd of productive, effective and problem-free cows.  Flying H has been scoring and culling for T/U Quality for over 40 years.

Milk Production

According to MARC data, Gelbvieh cross cows produce 35 percent more milk than Angus/Hereford cross cows.  They are also the earliest to reach puberty and rank first, in % rebred. At Flying H Genetics, we give our cows free health care, housing and feed.  In return, we expect them to work hard for us and produce calves that more than pay her expenses.  If not, we replace them with ones that do.

Fertility

If a bull’s mother was fertile, it’s likely his daughters will be too. Fertility Testing, requiring females to breed every year and watching the genetics that effect fertility, means the Flying H Genetics team can sell animals it knows are fertile and will produce plenty of offspring for you.

Efficiency

This relates to the weight of the calf weaned by his mother. If the cow is able to wean calves weighing 50% or more of her body weight without the aid of creep feed or irrigated pastures, then the offspring are likely to do the same. This helps customers build a more efficient cow herd that will rely less on external feed programs and more on the animals themselves.  It also promotes more moderate sized, productive cows that are more feed efficient.

Carcass

Each animals carcass traits are measured which helps us to identify and produce quality grades of “Choice” or higher marbling, maximize the ribeye area and carcass weight and optimize overall quality beef production.  Flying H has set minimum standards for growth, muscle and marbling in order to assure our customers that they are producing the best beef possible.

Disease Prevention

Flying H Genetics has always had an aggressive herd health program, including a number of vaccines and tests for genetic disorders that can harm overall heard health. We take great pains to make sure all cattle are healthy and in good breeding condition by eliminating genetic defects, treating to prevent all common diseases and parasites and developing them properly to assure productive breeding animals.

With our strict adherence to our Quality Guaranteed Standards, you can always count on animals from Flying H Genetics being the most healthy and productive livestock available on the market.
