Is Cloning Livestock the Future of the Beef Industry?

The holiday season is full swing and demand seemingly for everything is heating up, and beef is no exception. That of course brings a smile to us at Flying H Genetics, not just because the demand for beef is skyrocketing, but also because people world over are not being fazed by recent reports linking the consumption of beef to various ailments.

In fact, the demand for beef is so high that certain countries around the world will do whatever it takes to meet that demand and that includes thinking outside the box – the biological, au-naturel box. People and countries will try everything in order to raise the production of beef. Just look at what China is doing, because it is something straight out of sci-fi. According to Eater, they are turning to cloned cattle to keep up with rising beef demand. Yes, cloning, can you believe that?

Whitney Filloon writes, “China is hungry for beef – and to keep up with the demand for red meat, the nation of 1.4 billion people will soon be feasting on cloned cows. A Chinese commercial genetics company is set to be the first to clone cattle on an industrial scale, reports Popular Science.

While cloning animals has happened before, no one has seen anything on a scale like this before. It definitely seems dystopic, but BoyaLife, the company doing it, is investing close to $30 million into the operation to produce 100,000 cattle at first and then 1 million per year. This endeavor has raised a few eyebrows and rightfully so as the cloning of livestock has been banned in certain areas of the world. Public opinion notwithstanding, BoyaLife is determined to push through with their plans. What do you think? Is cloning livestock the future of the beef industry?
