Diners to Peruse American Beef in Peru

American Beef in Peru American beef producers have reason to celebrate with the opening of the export market to Peru.

Since 2003, Peru’s export verification program has complicated exports for American producers because of certification requirements. A recent agreement between the governments of Peru and the U.S., however, has removed those barriers and paved the way for more beef exports, says The Cattle Site.

Despite the export barriers that have been in place during recent years, beef and beef product exports to Peru exceeded $25 million in 2015. Exports of beef and beef products have increased since the 2009 U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement, but have still been hampered by the certification requirements.

Under the new agreement, which was reached during a recent trade and investment mission, Peru will allow the import of beef and beef products that were produced at federally inspected establishments in the U.S. In the past, Peru only allowed beef or beef products from establishments that were participating in USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Export Verification programs.

Peru had required the additional certification since 2003 due to fears of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, more commonly known as “mad cow disease.” However, the U.S has been in the negligible risk category for this disease since 2013, according to the World Organization for Animal Health. Despite the lowered risk since 2013, the restrictions had remained in place.

This new export agreement creates new opportunities for the American beef industry. Exports to Peru were already growing since 2009, even with the restrictions that were in place. Peru is one of the fastest-growing markets for beef in Latin America. American producers will now be able to take advantage of this rapidly growing market without needing to deal with the previous restrictions.

“Not many years ago, there was little American beef going to Peru, but through the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement, and agreements like this, we are seeing increased demand for high-quality American beef,” U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said in a statement following the agreement, reported The Cattle Site.
